QR Codes

What are Quick Response (QR) codes?
QR codes are barcodes, readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera and smartphones. When scanned they provide you with direct access to a website, instead of typing the URL, and often give you access to information only available via the QR code.

How to scan QR codes
If you’ve not used a QR code before you will need to first download the software.

Instructions for Apple users:

  1. Open the App Store and start a search for ‘RedLaser’.
  2. Download and install RedLaser. Once installed, launch the App.
  3. Using your camera, move the phone forward so that the entire QR code fills your screen (leaving some white space around it). The light from your computer screen will occasionally make it difficult to read. If that occurs, back up from the screen and then slowly move forward until the QR code comes into focus.
  4. Press the lightening icon at the bottom of app and the screen will change to allow you to scan the code.
  5. Once the code is read the site will open.

Hints, tips and problem solving

  • Some organisations have security settings in place restricting the downloading of applications. If this occurs, please contact your system administrator or you can download the application from your personal smartphone.
  • The light from your computer screen will occasionally make the QR code difficult to read. If that occurs, back up from the screen and then slowly move forward until the QR code comes into focus.
  • Ensure that the camera is being held flat to the code when scanning.
  • Depending on your phone model, you will need to make sure that there is sufficient white space around the QR code.
